The country of Zambia is divided into provinces, and one two-year teachers' college is located in almost every province. This program was set up to help provide a solution to the overcrowded elementary schools and severe need of teachers in rural communities. Each college has about 400 students (depending on the year and how many students were able to afford to attend that year). Even with this program, the lack of jobs has severely restricted success. Last year we visited eight high schools, and at every high school we asked these two questions:
"How many of you want to go to college when you finish high school?"
All hands go up.
"How many of you can afford to attend college when you have finished high school?"
Not one hand went up.
Completing the cycle of education, the Zambia's Scholarship Fund offers sponsorships for s
tudents hoping to attend the teachers' colleges. These students have graduated from high school and are eager to become teachers. Remember that in Northern Zambia, less than four percent can attend college. These teachers' colleges are helping provide a solution to the overall lack of education in Zambia. The Zambia's Scholarship Fund first began by offering scholarships to disadvantaged students to attend the Kasama Teachers' College and to fulfill their dream to become a teacher.
