Although elementary school is a free public service in Zambia, there isn’t enough tax money to pay for all the teachers needed to educate Zambia’s youth. Some graduates of the teachers' college program, desperate to teach, will “volunteer” at a school and live on gifts of food and shelter from the community. Additionally, many school children go to school only to find that there is no teacher!
Beginning at the elementary school level, the fund pays certified teachers (who have graduated from the teachers' college program) to teach in a rural or poverty-stricken area where children haven’t had a teacher before. Students in these areas are thrilled to attend school.
The teachers are thrilled to have a job, even though the teachers sponsored by the fund typically only receive about half as much pay as a regular government employee. The money goes to help them with lodging,
food, transport (bus or bike), clothing, etc.
Sponsors (you) can support this cause on an individual, family, or club level. You can even do this with your kids at school.
You, your school, or your club can adopt a school for only $1,200. This pays a teacher $100 a month to teach. The teacher, in turn, uses part of this money to help nephews, nieces, and cousins in their own family go to school. Your money goes further than you could ever imagine.
We have had several schools do fundraisers to adopt a school in Zambia. Each time they have been able to raise between $2,000 to $4,000. We have a free video and teacher's kit for schools willing to work on a project. Even individual classes have been able to sponsor a student through fundraising. The hands-on part of this thrills kids as they can have a pen pal in Zambia. By using the DVD, they will see sad, desperate faces turn to joy when a children receives his or her first textbook. Children and adults gain a better appreciation for their own education. This program is perfect for educators as well as individuals.
