The ZSF Book Program began with our first shipment of used textbooks in 2006. A full 40-foot container was shipped from northern Utah and successfully delivered to schools in northern Zambia. Another full container was shipped in early 2007. Volunteers traveled from Utah to meet the containers and spent several weeks delivering to schools in Northern Zambia.
In 2008 the Program was expanded to include other much needed school supplies, including desks, chairs, paper, pencils, erasers, wall maps, globe maps, etc. Also included were hygiene and first aid supplies that are severely lacking in rural villages. Future goals include shipping computers, more and better books, and all types of supplies to help the schools we sponsor do a better job of educating their young people. We also plan to include in each shipment, more hygiene supplies, wheelchairs, crutches, basic medical supplies, and many other items that are so needed in rural Zambia.
Our biggest challenge with this program is the cost of shipping. In mid-2008 it cost nearly $15,000 to send a full 40-foot container from northern Utah to Zambia. Each of our volunteers who go to Zambia to deliver these supplies, travel at their own expense. We need your help to cover shipping costs.
We also welcome your donation of books or supplies, provided any donation complies with the following guidelines:
No Junk! We can only accept books in new or like-new condition. Books should be appropriate for school children in grades 1 through College level, and the material therein should be appropriate for a developing nation. Any book depicting sex, violence, or materialism, are some examples of the types of books we cannot accept. For any schools or school districts wishing to donate classroom sets, please email Val Stokes to determine if it is possible for us to pick your books up at your location
Nothing more than 5 years old can be accepted. No exceptions.
No magazines.
Only new supplies, such as notebooks, paper, pencils, crayons, etc. will be accepted.
Any other items such as wheelchairs, crutches, etc. must be in very good condition. If you have items to donate please email Val Stokes, and arrangements will be made to drop off your donation or for us to pick up. On behalf of those who are in need, thank you in advance for your help!
